Spelling stops being guesswork: rebuilding ass from loose tiles forces you to commit to a letter order and get corrected instantly, a faster feedback loop than any spelling drill. Words you've physically assembled also stick better than words you've only read, which is exactly what timed formats punish you for not having.

• Pull the vowels out of jass first — once a, e, i, o, u sit apart from the consonants, the possible word shapes narrow fast.
• Hunt for stock endings next: -ed, -er, -es, and -ing anchor the back of a word, leaving fewer letters to arrange up front.
• Build small before building big — a solid three- or four-letter core often extends into the longer answers with one added tile.
• Physically reshuffle the tiles (or letters on paper) when you're stuck; staring at one fixed order is the fastest way to stop seeing alternatives.
• Note where the expensive tiles are — arrangements that put high-value letters to work tend to be the ones worth finding first.
• What doesn't work: random guessing. It occasionally cracks an easy scramble, but it doesn't scale to harder racks and builds no repeatable skill.
