How the score is counted
- Standard tile values. Each letter scores its value from the English Scrabble set, from 1 point (A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T, R) to 10 (Q and Z).
- Letters only. Spaces, hyphens, apostrophes and accents are dropped, so Côte d’Ivoire scores as COTEDIVOIRE. There are no number tiles: 49ers counts only E, R and S.
- The 100-tile bag. One set has 98 letter tiles and 2 blanks. When a name needs more of a letter than the bag holds, blanks stand in for the extra copies, and blanks score 0. That gives the playable score. A name that needs more than 2 blanks can’t be spelled with one set.
- No premium squares. No double or triple letter or word scores, so every name is compared on face value.
- Rankings. The headline score is the face value, as in our tables. NFL teams rank by nickname. Orlando scores 8, which ties Illinois and Indiana for 44th of the 50 states.
