What is Wordle?

Wordle is one of a selection of online word games provided by The New York Times. Played by an estimated 3,000,000 people worldwide, the game is very simple to play but difficult to master—even veteran players get caught out by some of the trickier word choices. It's exactly this blend of minimalism and simplicity combined with the depth of the challenge that keeps players coming back for more every day!

This daily puzzle asks players to guess a five-letter word within six tries, offering feedback in the form of color-coded tiles after each guess to indicate how close your letters are to the mystery word.

A big part of why Wordle has become so popular is the community feel of the game. Although you play alone, you can share your result with friends via messages or social media without giving away the day's answer - which is the same for every player. The challenge resets every midnight - and the game keeps track of your scores and winning streak - so players feel a little pressure to keep coming back and keep their winning streak going!

How to Play Wordle

Playing Wordle is straightforward, yet it offers a satisfying challenge. Each player has six attempts to guess a five-letter word chosen by the game for that day.

Here’s how it's played:

You start by typing any five-letter word as your initial guess. After submitting, each letter in your guess will be highlighted in one of three colors:

  • Green letters mean the letter is correctly placed in the exact spot of the mystery word.

  • Yellow letters indicate the letter is in the word but in a different position.

  • Dark grey tiles signify the letter is not in the word at all.

These clues are then used to refine your following guesses. So, for example, if you take a first guess and your the first letter turns green, that means you've got the first letter right. If the second letter turns yellow, they that letter is correct but in the wrong place - so you need to move it elsewhere for your next guess!

The goal is to correctly identify the word in as few attempts as possible. Be warned though - you only have 6 guesses to get the word right - otherwise your winning streak resets, your average number of guesses taken goes up, and - most importantly - you don't have any daily bragging rights to your friends! Success in Wordle relies on a mix of vocabulary strength, deductive reasoning, and sometimes a bit of luck!

Wordle Tips and Tricks

Ready to get started with Wordle? Here are some tips and tricks that'll help when it comes to guessing those tricky five-letter words!

  1. Choose a Strong Starting Word: Opt for a word that includes a mix of common vowels and consonants. A good starter word has a combination of unique vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and popular consonants like R, S, and T. This strategy helps to quickly narrow down the possible letters in the mystery word.

  2. Utilize Information Efficiently: Each guess should build on the information from your previous attempts. If a letter is highlighted in yellow, try it in different positions in your next guess. For bad letters in gray, avoid using them again.

  3. Try Repeat Letters: When you get correct letters, it can be tempting not to try that same letter again - but don't forget that many words have duplicate letters! If you get green tiles, don't be afraid to try them again somewhere else in your next word guess.

  4. Balance Your Vowels and Consonants: After your initial guess, balance your use of vowels and consonants based on the feedback. If you've identified most vowels, focus on common letters to pinpoint the word.

  5. Pay Attention to Letter Frequency: Consider the frequency of letters in the English language. Letters like E, T, A, O, and N are more common, so they're more likely to appear in the puzzle.

  6. Learn Common Word Patterns: Familiarize yourself with common letter pairings and endings. For example, "ING" at the end of a word is frequent, as are "TH," "CH," and "SH" pairings. This knowledge can guide your guesses, especially in the later rounds.

  7. Keep Track of Your Guesses: Mentally or on paper, keep track of the letters you've guessed and their outcomes. This will help you avoid repeating ineffective letters and focus on more promising options.

  8. Use Elimination to Your Advantage: Sometimes, making a guess that deliberately tests new valid letters or letter placements, even if it's unlikely to be the correct word, can provide valuable information for subsequent guesses.

  9. Try a Wordle answer finder: It might feel like cheating - but if you want to keep that winning streak running, don't be afraid of a Wordle solver! You don't have to find the day's answer - you might decide to simply gift yourself a couple of helpful letters!
